Our Story

Winemaker Hanna Wichmann and her father Ted Wichmann - Crush 2021

Hanna Wichmann, owner and winemaker at Wichmann Vineyard, has been in the vineyard since she was just a little girl.  Hanna’s father, Ted Wichmann, was one of the first pioneers of grape growing and wine making in Southern Illinois. Hanna’s love of growing grapes was first fostered when she was five years old and would compete for picking the largest bunch of Niagara grapes in her father’s vineyard each harvest.  The smell of vegetation and sweet fruit coming from the vineyard was a staple throughout her childhood.

Decades later, when Hanna decided she needed a change from her ten-year career as a social worker and licensed counselor, she could not think of anything she would rather do than return to the vineyard and start making her own wine. With the unfailing support of her husband and co-owner, Don Moberley, and the invaluable guidance of her parents, Sarah Andrew and Ted Wichmann, Hanna started wine production at Wichmann Vineyard in the fall of 2020.

Hanna has great passion for the land and vines to which she dedicates endless energy and care.  She loves seeing the annual life cycle of the vineyard and participating in the journey the vines make every year to produce outstanding wine. Hanna’s mission is to share this miraculous transformation with each customer she serves so they too can appreciate where their wine comes from.
